Words from the President: The Econogreen Crisis
In general when we hear or read about the economic crisis we relate it to the financial and economic area of our lives. Everything is about money, and change, resulting in solutions that need to come from the people who are making the economic decisions.
Of course this is true in part, but what is the root cause of our problems? Few people believe that a solution to this crisis could be to start saving. Saving money, saving energy, and saving natural resources. I believe that is right.
I believe the root cause of our crisis is the quantity of “waste” that we generate in our society, powered by a collective belief that “nature” can sustain us indefinitely.
Sunshine is free and the sun will continue to shine forever. Wind blows freely and we are powerless to disrupt it. Rain falls freely flowing into the rivers, and the rivers flow into the ocean, all contributing to the water covering 2/3 of the world’s surface.
In our parents generation, society had few concerns regarding the conservation of natural resources. They believed that there were enough resources, including oil and gas for countless future generations.
Science and technologies have progressed faster than we could have ever imagined. It is commonly believed that these technological advancements have the capacity to solve any problems that our civilization may encounter.
The accepted beliefs of our parent’s generation, that all natural resources are unlimited, continue to hold true in the minds of the present generation resulting in continued waste. Similarly, instead of saving money we spend until we have no more and then we borrow, paying high interest rates and therefore wasting yet more money.
We have become the consumer generation, spending not out of necessity but because we simply need to satisfy our need to buy. We need the latest model, the latest technology, and the latest fixture, with little concern to the problem of how we will dispose of the unnecessarily generated garbage. We dispose of a car, supporting the manufactures need to keep producing to thereby meet the demands of the consumers. We discontinue the use of a computer because we want a faster one; we dispose of an appliance because we want the newest model with promises of technological advances thereby resulting in saving, etc, etc.
We have become consumers and are encouraged to continue this behavior with messages claiming that in order to solve the economic crisis we need to keep consuming. In other word, keep wasting.
Today, our scientists share with us a conflicting message, that we are wasteful and polluting unnecessarily, and that we are destroying our habitat with our wasteful behavior.
I believe that it is time that we start saving; saving money, saving water, saving energy, saving our natural resources and thereby saving our natural habitat.
We need to stop polluting and generating consumerism waste. We need to stop wasting and acquiring disposable items, and instead, start saving and recycling.
By saving instead of wasting we are saving our world for future generations.
This is my commitment.
