LED Leads the Way
Changing incandescent and fluorescent lights for LEDs – particularly those with Energy Star approval – is a good place to start.
Besides benefiting the environment LEDs have high approval in the work place. LED light bulbs provide even light without flickering, so employees experience less eye strain and the problems related to eye strain. They are very likely more productive.
Why switch?
The benefits to LED lights are many:
- They last a long time - about 25,000 hours
- Light is even and well distributed
- LED lights provide excellent colour quality that stays clear and consistent over time
- They are durable. LEDs have no filament so circumstances that would break an incandescent bulb don't damage an LED bulb.
- They are cool and cause no heat build up. LEDs produce 3.4 Btu's/hour, compared to 85 for incandescent bulbs. In the summer months, LEDs aren't adding to indoor heat and can reduce air conditioning costs
- They are efficient. LED light bulbs use only 2-10 watts of electricity (1/3rd to 1/30th of Incandescent or CFL). Because these bulbs last for years, energy is saved in maintenance and replacement costs.
- They are cost effective. LEDs are more expensive to purchase but the cost is recouped through energy savings and the longevity of the bulbs. LED bulbs have 10 times the life span of compact fluorescents and last much longer than incandescents.
